The First Saudi State (1744–1818) and The Second Saudi State (1824–1891) had established a political entity centered in Najd, based on a partnership between the Al Saud family and the religious reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. However, both states eventually collapsed due to internal strife and external pressure from the Ottoman Empire. By the late 19th century, the Al Saud were in exile in Kuwait, and the region was fragmented.
The Rise of Abdulaziz Ibn Saud
The story of modern Saudi Arabia begins with a daring, almost mythical, raid. In 1902, a young Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, accompanied by a small band of loyal followers, recaptured the fortress of Masmak in Riyadh, the ancestral home of his family. This bold act was the first spark of a three-decade-long campaign of unification.

Ibn Saud was a master strategist, combining military prowess with shrewd diplomatic marriages to forge alliances with powerful tribes. His elite fighting force, the Ikhwan, were instrumental in conquering the vast territories of Najd, Al-Ahsa, Jebel Shammar, and the Hejaz, which was home to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina.
The Royal Decree: A New Name for a New Reality
By 1932, the major regions of the peninsula were under Ibn Saud’s control. The territory was initially known as the Sultanate of Nejd and its Dependencies and later the Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd. However, on September 23, 1932, a royal decree was issued to unify these regions under a single name: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Al-Mamlaka al-ʿArabiyya as-Suʿūdiyya).
This was not merely a bureaucratic change. It was the birth certificate of a nation. The name itself was significant:
- Kingdom (Mamlaka): Denoting a sovereign state.
- Arabia (Arabiyya): Rooting the nation in its geographical and cultural heritage.
- Saudi (Su’udiyya): Acknowledging the ruling house of Al Saud as the unifying force.
This act transformed Ibn Saud from a conqueror into a nation-builder. September 23rd was chosen to immortalize this foundational moment of political and administrative unity.
